Tsunami Alerts Lifted After Powerful 8.8 Quake in Russia’s Far East

One of the world’s strongest earthquakes, measuring 8.8, hit Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. It triggered tsunami alerts in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and parts of North America, causing over 2 million people to evacuate. Luckily, no major damage or injuries were reported. Hawaii saw waves up to 1.7m, and California recorded waves over 1m. Russia’s Severo-Kurilsk town saw 5m waves. The alerts have now been lifted. A nearby volcano, Klyuchevskoy, also began erupting. In Russia’s Kuril Islands, power was cut off and a state of emergency was declared. Several aftershocks followed, with one as strong as 6.9.
